Context: Atlanta has long prided itself as the cosmopolitan center of the South, particularly in terms of it's culinary options. Historically restaurants have regularly popped up to take advantage of the food craze of the moment, whether organic hamburgers, gourmet cupcakes or Korean tacos. However, in a challenging economic climate for the food industry, many would-be caterers and restaurateurs have realized that it might just make more sense to bring the food to where the people are As with the street food movement sweeping many urban centers across the country, Atlanta has developed it's own urban food culture that seeks to combine sophisticated and creative food options with lower costs by means of a fleet of mobile food trucks. With offerings which range from Korean Tacos, to BBQ, to fish and chips and baked goods, Atlanta’s food trucks have developed a weekly itinerary which allows them to serve customers across the city. Not surprisingly, the food truck phenomenon was not anticipated by Atlanta’s city code. Though the food trucks are indeed mobile, current code limits food vending to private locations such as parking lots and limits the vendors’ ability to provide shelter, seating or dining space to their customers. Challenge: Create an infrastructure that is both temporary and portable that will support gatherings of food trucks and their patrons. Goals:
Program: Entrants are asked to create an infrastructure that supports up to 10 food trucks and 200 patrons that could be quickly demounted and transported to another site or storage facility. The following considerations should be taken into account:
Site: 12th and Peachtree Food Truck ParkAtlanta, GA 30309 Submission Requirements: These represent the minimum required information for the competition. Site Plan: One Site Plan. Scale as appropriate to design. Perspective View(s): Minimum of one perspective view. Entrants are encouraged to use whatever representation techniques best convey their design intent. Narrative: Descriptive Narrative, 300 word maximum included on 24’’x36’’ presentation. Format: Entry to be one 24’’x36’’ Composition in PDF format, max size 15MB. Registration number must be clearly shown in 1/2" text in lower right corner of board Resources:

Questions and Answers: 1. Is the 300 word limit for all text on the board or just the description? The 300 word limit is just a maximum for the written description of the project, it does not relate to other text on the boards. 2. Is the comp due on sat night or sun night? The entries are due Sunday @ 11:59pm, November 6th, Eastern Time Zone. 3. Do we have to provide restroom or portable toilets? No, they are not required. 4. Is the site normally empty when not in use? No, it is typically a parking lot every other day of the week. 5. The program seems very vague, can you provide any more specific information? No, it is purposefully vague. Take advantage of it! 6. What is the longest/shortest amount of time the structure would be used for at any one period of time? One day (12 hours), which could incorporate lunch and dinner.
7. What kind of other site conditions would the structure be portable to? See number 9. Mostly left over spaces that are being underutilised.
8. When did the Atlanta Street Food coalition begin to meet at this particular site? A couple months ago..they switch regularly.
9. What are other types of places that the Atlanta Food Coalition group has met before? Other parking lots, entry court at Woodruff Art Center, Howel Mill Food Truck Park, Auburn Curb Market, etc.
10. Is it possible to have the 3D model transferred into a SketchUp file for those of us not working with SketchUp Pro or Rhino?
I opened sketchup and imported the 3d dwg. It's posted below.
11. Should the design focus more on the portability aspect or be more specific to the site with principles that could be applied elsewhere?
Be more specific to the site with principles that could be applied elsewhere? But it still needs to be "portable".
12. Where's the Rhino model?
Sorry, it exceeded the 20mb upload limit, so I've reposted it as a zip file.
13. Would the food vendors be responsible for the transporting of infrastructure from site to site? Meaning, would the infrastructure need to break down and fit inside of a food truck or on the back of a trailer?
On the back of a trailer.
14. When you say temporary and portable infrastructure, does it have to be able to be put up and taking down in one day? Or what is the time frame? One day, max.
15. Can any part of the infrastructure remain on site at the parking lot while the food trucks aren't there? No.
16. Where is the current power source for the generators on the 12th and Peacthree site? Sorry, the generators create the energy...no on-site power. The generators just need to be considered s they are noisy and unsighty. |
